Wouldn't you think a little martial arts blocking training might saved a life here? People... I swear I don't understand at least learning the basics... at least you might survive and go the hospital with defensive knife wounds. This is one of those cases where Be Real would have been a good investment. Or maybe even a defender or self defense weapon!

The assault took place about 3:15 p.m. in the 14000 block of Harvest Avenue, Deputy Pete Gomez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Headquarter's Bureau said in a written statement.
Two male suspects were arrested for the crime, Gomez said.
Sheriff's officials released no further information Saturday.

Training at the Salton Sea

Hey all.. long time from the last post but life has been busy for me, as most of you know.

First, we are going to have a weekend training at the Salton Sea, my place, May 14th. I will keep everyone up to speed on that with lots of new material to show everyone. Should be a great time, BBQ and such. Camping on the beach or around the house is fine too.

Over the next few months I'm going to change the look of our website and our mission will change a bit as things are firming up in Hollywood too. More on that later as things come in but frankly we have gone a long way to getting to our goal there.

I will be producing more defender, self defense, self defense weapon, and other specials this year too as I have several in development plus some new training material to be had. I'm almost finished with a book too so that will be coming out as well. I found an old manuscript I started many a year ago, scanning that in and cleaning it up too so that will come up for sale later this summer.

Anyway, that is an update and I hope to see all of you Anjing Banfaests out at the Salton Sea!

I have been noticing that most people think that martial arts is physical. It's really mental. Our system (Anjing Banfa) has always been separated into two levels; the physical and the mental. Second level ranks were always set to be physical ranks; except white belt. Once a person reaches into the high black belt ranks, its not a matter of technique anymore; but rather the application and transformation (not Obama style). It's important to work with students to expand their thinking and not to "polish" technique. Don't get me wrong, technique is vitally important but it isn't the art. The art is in your head and your soul. It's good to remember that a fight begins and ends in your mind; as I have said for over 30 years. It was true then and its still true now.

Anjing Banfaests... this is a classic example of not paying attention to people and your environment. Also where was the second guard? I always thought there were two, but anyway maybe this guy was successful to disarm both guards. I would think that some more training on how to cover each other might be in the companies future, what to do you think? Anyway, I would think that some more martial arts training or hand gun disarms or simple weapon disarms might have been of some value here... I presume the trade off here is personal safety but then why do we have guards if they don't put up a fight?

Police are searching for a man who robbed an armored car guard at gunpoint this afternoon as she picked up a bank deposit in southern Dallas.

Officers were called to the Family Dollar store along Cedar Crest Boulevard near East Kiest Boulevard about 1:20 p.m.

Investigators believe one of two female Garda armored car guards had entered the store to pick up a deposit. A man who was already inside the store purchasing gum waited for the guard to get a money bag.

'He came up from behind her and disarmed her at gunpoint,' said spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse.

I often carry far too much stuff in my pockets, and these pants allow me to do so without showing it. They’re durable, and I have not been able to find any other pants that do what these do. I wear these and Scottevest’s Ultimate cargo pants almost exclusively, because after wearing each type a few times, standard pants with standard pockets feel awkward.

The Hidden Cargo Pants are more formal than the Ultimate Cargos, or 5.11 Tactical Pants. The Hidden Cargos feel more like dress pants. The main difference between the Ultimate and Hidden is that the Ultimate have a rougher fabric, cargo pockets, and zip-off lower legs. The main pocket suspension is the same.

Access to pockets is excellent in the Hidden Cargos. The main pockets on each side of the front consist of three pockets in one. There’s a magnetic clasp to access the outer pockets, which are very large (they come down almost to the knee) and are divided into front and back sections.

As long as you’re wearing a good belt it doesn’t really get too heavy. The design of the pockets means it is far less cumbersome than standard pants, but it can, of course, get cumbersome if you really stuff them full-- which would be a feat. Without a good belt, however, the pants can get a bit heavy and slide down if they are loaded with stuff.

What do I fill my pockets with? I always carry around a large wallet, pen, comb, Chapstick, rosary, large thumb drive, Leatherman, phone, palm tungsten T5 (in large metal case) and a handkerchief. I carry it all in the front pockets, as I feel uncomfortable sitting with stuff in my back pockets. These are enough large items to produce a noticeable bulge in standard pants; in the Hidden Cargo Pants, there’s no noticeable bulge most of the time.

I have just uploaded a new article "the three laws of handgun disarm", up on hub pages.com. I have been researching self-defense techniques and programs on the Internet and I have been just appalled by what I found. So I have taken it upon myself to start a self defense set of articles that will cover my, broader definition of self-defense, then my constituents.

In this particular article I discuss the requirement that you disarm a handgun by the rules and not by luck. And most assuredly you don't put your shoes on your hands to protect yourself, as I saw one person do in a self-defense video, recently. What trash. I even saw another person decide to describe how you escape from me front choke, first by getting in a horse stance, and then starting to try to turn their arms off of your neck and then once you're successful to strike them in the head with a hammer fist.

Again what rubbish. It's very clear that person had never been attacked in her life. I can guarantee you that if somebody's going to choke you from the front, they're going to shake that the Be-Jesus out of you, and push you against the closest wall to knock you out. All in the meantime you're trying to get into a horse stance. What a horrifying advice is being given on the Internet about self-defense.

I'm a firm believer that not only should you be able to disarm almost any type of weapon but that you should be able to, in your own self-defense, utilize that weapon to protect yourself. Therefore, I have started a series of articles that will explore, from the top down, a broader concept of martial arts and or self defense such that, who knows, I may actually start a trend here. God for bid.

Anyway back to the article. I cover the concepts of muzzle control in this article and then, from the disarm making sure that you give distance, and then finally ensuring that the weapon is loaded and ready for action. The three most important rules about teaching martial arts

In my 46 plus years of being connected to martial arts classes, teaching martial arts, women's self defense, I have seen the good the bad and the ugly. Teaching on the Matt isn't as easy as some make it look like. As a matter of fact, typically you'll end up teaching in a similar fashion as you were taught. Now, depending upon where you are in the world you're teaching style has to stay current. What I mean by this is that old world teaching techniques may not be applicable in today's environment. Now I live and teach in California and I can say with some level of authority that old world techniques, that is teaching techniques, are absolutely not applicable here. Unless of course you like to be sued. Old world, we could actually hit our students as a form of discipline, but those days have long since gone. I'm not an advocate of that form of correction however sometimes it has its place, as ugly as that sounds, to help reset a student’s attitude or focus.

The first rule of teaching is simple; no one likes to feel stupid on the mat. When you get everybody onto the mat, and it comes time for a demonstration or the like, no one likes to feel stupid. It's your job to have your students feel as comfortable as possible on the mat, such that they are ready and eager to learn. Learning can only start when you're comfortable. Other really stupid things I have seen is in regard to visitors. Many teachers will actually pull visitors out onto the mat and demonstrate how stupid the visitor is plus how smart a martial arts instructor is. Frankly, I see that more often than not and it's disgusting. So embraced the first rule of teaching and that is "no one likes to feel stupid".

The second rule of teaching is that people have to have fun. Let's face it, adults are really just big kids. Your lessons need to be fun and if you can achieve that you will set the groundwork for learning. So when you do your lesson plan, make sure that you can add the component of fun to your lesson. If you fail to make your class fun, in the long run, you won't have many students, particularly long-term students. Remember, the visitor that sitting in your visitor section, and they see how much fun is going on with your teaching on the mat, they naturally can't wait to get there. Frankly, it's one of your best sales tools. Regardless of your teaching women's self defense, martial arts, or even weapons training, fun needs to be at the center of your lesson.

The third rule of teaching is in fact people need to learn something. I don't care if you were doing an exercise class they need to learn something. If a student first off feels comfortable "not stupid", and they are having fun in your class, the last piece or key to success is in fact they walk away with some jewel of knowledge. When you think about it, what our students there for? They're there to learn, have fun, and not feel stupid.

So in summary, you can see that teaching, or rather legendary teaching, it is no accident. Fundamentally, people want to have fun and learn, and if you fail to do this you have failed as a teacher. Worse yet, because they didn't learn anything or they were embarrassed, they could get damaged or injured out in the real world because you didn't teach them. You didn't set the foundation for them to learn properly and therefore their experience on the street has a direct relationship to you as a teacher. Teaching isn't for everyone. But a good legendary teacher embraces these three rules and teaches at a level that is typically unheard of. You must teach every class, better than the one you did before. And if you can do this as a teacher, you will be surrounded by students for the rest of your life.

Making darts

As you can see.. we have had some technical difficulties in making darts for this years test. Why, you might ask? Well, each year it seems that we must redesign darts do to the differences of the materials tolerances in manufacturing. Key to dart design is that they are safe. A dart can be made to really hurt and fly out there, but make one with good flight characteristics, with range, and be safe, is another task altogether. Here is what I'm seeing:

First the foam rod that the test team got is a slight bit smaller in diameter. Given everything else with the dart design being the same, what this meant was blow by in the tube, thus the force on the dart itself, was lessened. The result is a dart that didn't go far and also had some flight issues as the weigth to lifting body ratios had changed. So, I varied, or well Matiase and I did, the aft end of the foam body to try and stop the blow by, but that lead to a more unstable dart in flight. I added some more weight to the front in hopes of allowing the dart more mass, thus more flight time... this was marginal at best but did increase the striking power, which is the wrong way. So, we finally had to compromise and go back to a dart with less range but maintained the safety value. Here is a picture of the range of my darts...

That distance is about 150 feet.. the test teams darts are around 80 feet at best. Oh well.. darn, that means you will need to use stealth, cunning, and the natural aggressive nature of an anjing banfaist to overcome my ballistic advantage. Darn, huh?...

April 30 Black Belt Test

Update: Well lots has happened since Dec... I moved out to my new house in the desert where I can train everyday, shoot, 4 wheel, and more. What is most important is that the house is set up for Anjing Banfa training. As such, we are going to have our black belt test this year, out here at the Salton Sea. It affords us a variety of training environments and capabilities that we have never had before; which is just great. This is our own private beach with fire pit and all.

So this year we will have one of the highest speed low drag tests of all time. We have a stellar group of visiting sensei's and masters who will be here for the 4 day test. We have activities that we, in the past, could never do so it should be another record breaking Anjing Banfa test. We have two master candidates: Grant Smillie and Larry Ahlquist, so wish them well; as they are going to need it. I will keep all posted on the test... Master Peter Brusso

Tomahawks, simples weapons disarms.. and legendary teaching

As you all know, http://asksensei.blip.tv/ is our primary way to communicate our weekly lessons. I started a legendary teaching series and also a class that I have not taught since 1973 recently. I strongly encourage all anjingbanfaests and friends to listen to those podcasts as they are something you can't get anywhere else, at least to my knowledge.

I have a couple of projects that have come to fruition lately: the 2008 black belt test DVD set, and the simple weapons disarm disk. As you can see the site is growing with video products and other great lesson. I think its important to have all that you can get about our art, so check your library and see if you have all the DVD's I have produced. Yes, the money is good too but I won't be able to purchase another car with the proceeds... there just are not that many of us but what is important is that you have a complete library of what we do.

Review

I’m a kind of person that will let you know right up front what I think….. not of course without a real assessment of what I have to say and some reflection mind you. I had 26 pages of handwritten notes on what I reviewed. In other words, I like to have my “ducks” in order (perhaps even “rubber ducks”! That’s a story in and of itself, and you would have either had to be part of the testing process itself or have had the chance to see the DVD’s to understand “Major Brooks” comment on the “rubber duck”—you can by ordering the 2 Volume: 10 DVD set!).

So, with my introduction out of the way let me tell you that the testing or perhaps maybe better stated ‘the right of passage” for eight (actually more, but you will need to view the test to understand) of the Anjing Banfa team was the most intense and comprehensive I have seen. I know that every “style” has its own testing or right of passage required to earn the next level up in the ranking system and certainly everyone will undeniably argue that theirs is sufficient…. well maybe, and then again maybe not! After reviewing this series of DVD’s you may come away reassessing your own testing process for promotions (I know I have …. hey, that’s what lifelong learning is all about and one cannot ever think of becoming a “Legendary Sensei” if you believe you have reached the mountain top and possess the “Holy Writ” itself and there is no further need to learn more. Not only in the martial arts, but life itself.) There is reason these words are in red. Read on… you will be back!

I can readily identify with the process with which these individuals went through over several days. As a former law enforcement tactical instructor (SWAT) as well as a firearms and defensive tactics instructor I was required to go through much of the same intense training….. however, I never was required to learn man tracking or go into a dangerous city of Mexico to complete an assignment as part of the test requirement. Nevertheless, I certainly can recall laying in sub-zero weather on a tactical assignment for hours in the middle of the night as well as making some hair-raising entries into buildings where there are people bent on killing you! So, I felt some kinship to those testing in this series and found much of the range exercises like watching movies of myself in my “former life” as a law enforcement officer. Watching this training and instruction made me long for the adrenaline rushes I received in law enforcement. A few homesick moments!

The series opens with the Anjing Banfa team getting ready to go to their test destination site which no one knew the specific location (later learned, once they arrived, it was just outside of the Mexico boarder). During the preparation they were all addressed by an Anjing Banfa Master who affectionately called himself “Stone Man” – reminded me of a first day military induction briefing. He certainly let the team know that he was serious about the mission they were about to embark upon.

An interesting twist was the drive to the testing site…. some very nice countryside I thought (a few bug splats on Kerry Sensei’s windshield were nice touch. Surely a few had to be the remains of a large “Cubachabra” that roam the area between California and Mexico – just kidding!). Kerry Sensei’s explanation of the “Brotherhood of the Patient Spirit” – becoming “One with nature” was interesting. After a few stops along the way to pick up some items they finally arrived at the testing site not far from the border of Mexico. The arrival at the site began with another briefing much like the first with Major Books (Former British S.A.S. – Special Air Service) setting down some rules and discussion on weapons safety with a no nonsense flare. This is obviously a man who trains people to stay alive in combat.

What the viewer of this extensive set of test DVD’s is going to quickly learn is that the testing process that these Anjing Banfa team members are about to engage in is one on survival and personal endurance, both physically and mentally. You are definitely not going to see traditional Dojo rank testing methods in an Anjing Banfa promotional exam. The art of Anjing Banfa I have learned goes much deeper into human survival in terms of wilderness and mental preparedness – thus it goes beyond traditional street defense tactics, although this is certainly part of the art. It is a true military style combat art that requires I believe a different mind set than the average martial artist has. I can bet some of you reading this are getting somewhat offended right at this juncture in the review. Here me out….. quite honestly, you just are not going to get anything like this unless you train in these military and yes, law enforcement style survival tactics. Listen, that’s just the way it is! The “combat” style of defense and “mental preparedness” have saved my life on the street many times. But, you can learn many of these things and add them to your own arsenal – now, scroll back up the page and reread the words in red. Enough said. Just giving an honest review of what I see and have personally experienced in life!

What is so strikingly different I found in reviewing this testing process was that the test really didn’t focus on what they had already learned on the “mat”.... in other words, a formal production of the rehearsals that had been perfected along the way by Sensei. No, the student was now brought to a different level of testing in which they actually learned more. Now, that is UNIQUE!

You will observe the eight team members and others in the team who didn’t even realize they were being “tested” for promotion drink the so called “Elixir” to stop the “Silver Headed Spear Fish”. After the explanation of what these particular “Parasites” (my description) by Major Brooks and Master Brusso can do I would have ordered a tanker full of the stuff. You will notice quite a few of the team members asking for extra shots of the “Elixir” which I found quite funny. I don’t ever recall in any of my promotional exams learning how to put together minnow traps with bait to catch dinner (crayfish) for the next day. They were going into the “pond” with those traps – ah, the reason for the “Elixir!”

Another very interesting twist to the test was live gunfire being shot over the heads of the team members. This was an ongoing process for a few days of the exam and was done to get the members oriented to the gunfire and getting down when it started. A very good explanation on cover versus concealment as well as moving properly in a tactical fashion was instructed to the members of the team. I observed one of the best lessons given on drawing the weapon (side arms). Discussed was the concept of “flagging”, “muzzle discipline”, “muzzle awareness”, proper tactical holstering concepts, “fingering the weapon”, reloading tactics, (orienting your magazine), site alignment and site picture, the “combat glide” with tactical reload and of course review and instruction after live fire drills. Also covered was a well explained and demonstrated discussion on adrenaline and breathing concepts, gear preparation, using your peripheral vision, and terrain – very good life saving skills! I’m going to say this again…. Not your typical black belt promotional exam!

Now, there was a scene where all the team members were lined up getting instructions when someone’s dog (“Lassie on crack”) strolls into the scene… I loved it! Master Brusso is heard telling one member of the team to give the dog a kick and get the dog away from the line. The dog looked confused, tail between his legs and ears back and the eyes looked somewhat rolled back in his head to me—hilarious and unintentional addition in the filming. Dog looked hung over! Ah, not to be out done “Lassie” is heard in the background on the porch of the house later on during the awarding of certificates attempting to bark…. well, not a real bark as it sounded like “Lassie” was suffering a case of laryngitis. Great stuff!

Back to the serious side of things….. the team went through rain, sleet, and snow during one their night exercises. Not an average day of testing for black belt! Team members were required to set up camp and sleep outdoors… the setting up of camp proved to be a time where good preparation and planning would have been helpful. It was obvious to the instructors that the team had not practiced using some of the equipment and the location and placement of the tents were brought into question based on the fact that a storm with heavy rain and winds were coming through the area overnight… a small fact or piece of information noted after some members had already set their tents. A good lesson in testing one’s stress level for sure! All part of the “test.”

You will see a very interesting “night undercover ops mission” into Mexico. What was the Mission Objective? Get into Tecate, Mexico carrying the “Guppy” (Defender) – disguised as a religious tool , religious literature and pick-up Tecate beer and carniceria, returning across the border in time or stay the night in Mexico – safely! Some good footage of the members inside of Mexico and operating as a team and what I found interesting was the very little attention that I could determine, by the footage at least, that there was no real attention given to the group walking around video taping. Did they get back in time? You will have to get the DVD’s to find out!

You will also get to hear an interesting and often time’s humorous discussion of the team members “Night Mission Two” (Due to inclement weather the mission could not be taped). There was a thorough explanation presented by Master Brusso outlining the mission so the viewer will miss nothing of what was required of the team members to complete it.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to track someone you will get what I feel was an entire seminar worth of instruction on how to do so from a US Border Patrol Agent and Anjing Banfa Black Belt. You will also see the team successfully track two of its members over grass, wet and dry ground!

If you ever wanted to learn how to use a “Ninja Net” Master Brusso instructed a class on the use of one. I have never seen one used and quite honestly had no idea that it could truly be used as such an effective tool to tangle and disarm an assailant. The series also comes with a disk covering more of a detail version on the instruction of the “Ninja Net.” You have to see it to believe it!

As a bonus in this series you are going to get a “Ninja Demo Disk” in which Master Brusso participated in. In was produced in 1982 – Boulder, Creek, CA. It covers some interesting history and spiritual aspects of Ninjutsu. I found the techniques to be very unique – I actually was able to practice a few of them and as I always attempt to do by adding them to my arsenal of new techniques. Very entertaining!

And for IPOD users…. No need to fret, you have a disk in the series that you can download to covering the black belt test. And for those who want to do a quick review or grab some of the highlights of the black belt testing series there is a disk in the package on this as well.

In conclusion, there is a “spirit” displayed or perhaps one that I personally sensed by all involved in the testing process. It’s impossible for me to explain it adequately in words… because I don’t think it can be! I believe you will need to view the actual testing process in order to experience it yourself. I will say this…. I felt that I became one with the team even though I was not there. I don’t know, perhaps what they were experiencing has been my experience in many ways, but I believe also it was the same spirit of oneness that binds all true martial artists together…..one, I hope, that we would all be willing to lay down our life for in order to help another brother or sister if they were in harms way.

I hope you experience what I did. I felt as though I was actually part of the Anjing Banfa family! Strange? Maybe, but the truth nonetheless!

Post black belt test update

Well.. we have had some great times in Anjing Banfa this year. We started with the prep for the black belt test, then the test itself. The test was held down on the boarder of Mexico and the US. We were only 4.5 miles from the boarder in an active human and drug smuggling area. The team had a great time learning about man tracking, shooting and night operations. We had no accidents and just a whole lot of Anjing Banfa style experience. I am working on the videotape still! We had a combat camera guy with us who gave us some great footage. Lately, as shown on our videos up on http://asksensei.blip.tv/ I have been concentrating on bring our fighting abilities up. We always move between 1/3 belt level material, 1/3 fighting, and 1/3 martial culture. Well, I have been more focused on the fighting part, but now we are starting to reach a reasonable capability, I will be moving back to our standard format. With that being said, I have also focused on knife on knife capabilities for our practitioners. So, more to come and I hope all of you are enjoying the lessons on Asksensei!

The New and official Anjing Banfa syllabus is now available. It isn't a "how to" manual but rather it's annotated with my notes to help the student capture the essence of each technique. It also has a large section on "culture" topics, weapons, and necessary gear. It is a must for every student of Anjing Banfa to keep us all on the same page. I am selling each level individually to save the students money, as they only need to purchase the level they are studying at the time. Alright.. we only had 8 entries on the poll.. 1 for Run, 1 for close the distance, and 6 for Remove their oneness.. which is correct. The first rule in a fight is to remove their oneness with you. This can be achieved by various methods... all you are doing is steering their focus off or you and onto something else.

For example you could use anticipatory techniques to move them into thinking something is going to happen, an attack is short in coming, or the like.. you can use sensory methods, like slapping your leg... and making a move like your are going to attack, thus setting up false timing in the fight... odd hand motions or movements can work well. What you are doing is not allowing them to "feel" you or see inside your head.

On http://www.awarriorsway.com site we will have on the members only page a document called "Mental Warrior", for download.. check that out in due time to discuss the actual scientific aspects of this question..

Students... check out the asksensei blog for our stats on our weekly lessons.

We have been putting up our weekly lessons and I have been floored by the response. I think that we now have a medium to show our art, to train people in our art, and to help artists become better warriors.

Warriorhood isn't a right, it isn't something you are born into, its something that you are taught to be, to encompass and to embrace; if you have the right teachers. I think that this new medium, podcasting, will allow us to push our ways out to others to work with. If they are good, they will continue and if they are poor.. they will die out.

Just like Ninjutsu, a very old art, a practical art, one born from war... if the techniques taught to the ninja were poor, they didn't come back. They couldn't propagate the poor techniques so the art cleansed itself via combat.

This is like our blogging and podcasting now as its a social medium, just like war. If the techniques and the teachings are good, people will comment, come back, and continue to learn. If they are bad.. they just won't return to it at all... so this is the face of social media and how it will play with the arts.

On another note: we or I am teaching again on Sunday mornings at 10 AM sharp. Its open to all so if you are interesting, come on by, sign a waiver.. and start learning to defend yourself. We are enjoying some very high level training lately, but will return to basics every Sunday so that belts can continue to be earned....

Test Complete

Congratulations to Santino Batista, Mike Miller, and TK Porter, as they passed their blackbelt test! Here is a quick view of the days:

Friday day 3: They arrived at my location at 7:30 PM.. got their tents set up and we had the "Bipolar day". Ultimately we watched the Alex Wetherbee memorial DVD which is a difficult thing to watch. We watched it all the way through. It was important for me to show them others have lost students and friends from their Dojo but one must remember how they lived, not how they died. Then we watched the up lifting movie "The Secret". We finally hit the bed at 2:34 AM for only a four hour sleep. Their tents got wet too, so it was good test to see about water proofing.

Saturday day 4: They started at 6:30 AM pulling down the wire fencing on the main fence around the house. We had some other cleaning jobs until our dignitary arrived at 10:30 AM. This gentleman took the class until 3 PM... then I took back over and taught a defender class. Then the ICE night... which one person wasn't allowed in the ICE due to a medical condition. We made it difficult for that one too... ended the ICE night around 10PM. In the sack for a good nights sleep.. then 6:30 Toes on the line...

Sunday day 5: I moved the Testies out to the front and had a very long talk about the arts, our art, and how to teach. We did mostly all mental stuff... until Master Mel LaGasca showed up. He actually flanked out position and listened and took pictures of us from the hill side.. we didn't know he was there.. we are now dead.. smile. He took the class and worked with them... until graduation... where a black belt for their fallen student was received by his widow.

I will have some podcasts from the testies in a few weeks.. after they get over the test!

I won't say that "Dick Sensei" didn't like our traditional dragon on the designs, but that is what we have had for over 35 years. The artist was Bennie Barasa from LLNL. He died early in life, and so I want to keep the memory and his work with us.

I have been looking at the shooting schedule for video next year and we are going to try to do a video syllabus. Along with several other projects... I also think we will be documenting our sword work and provide video feeds for our classes.

I have been working on the "Sensei's Field Manual" which is now grown to over 50 pages.. so I might need to cut it back as it was intended to be a "Field Manual" something you can take with you into the field.. at this rate you will be the size of a phone books.. I have sampled out the outline for some to comment on... the lucky ones... so far I appear to be on track with everything.

I just put up one of our lessons from the black belt test of 2006. Its on the movie page and its our combat machete class with disarms.. and of course, Matt Camber ... our star of all videos on Anjing Banfa... he really is a funny guy! I started to edit the verbiage from Matt but it turned out ... if I did, it would just be a silent movie, and so I chose to have a viewer discretion notice instead.

I was working on some of the forums over the past few weeks and re-learned how stupid people really are! So I will stop trying to educate the stupid. It is amazing to me how many peoples cups are so full they can't add another drop! They need to read "Zen and the Martial Arts", then they can start to improve who and what they are. I guess what bothered me the most was the negativity of all its members, just cutting things down and making fun at everything. They welcome new members then yell at them for posting things in the wrong place, like they know that... not very friendly at all. I suspect they are very junior to the arts and don't understand the true nature of warriorhood. Oh, well, the world is just where it always has been in those places, anyway....

On a more positive note, the site is coming along nicely. I will be helping Master Ed Martin in developing his new site too, which will be patterned after what we are doing on the web. SEO, downloads, and more... should be fun and I will let everyone know when and where. I also know that Ed Sensei is coming out here at the end of Sept.. I can't hook up with him, I think as I'm working a show.. but well see about him visiting some of you.. if you are interested....

I was having a discussion yesterday with a martial artist back East, and we were discussing knife blocks. I feel that Gliding X blocks with a turn out of the way of the attack are always best. I reminded them to look at the four weapons laws:

1) Clear the angle of the attack of the weapon
2) Control the weapon
3) Neutralize the weapon
4) Neutralize the attacker

Look at all knife defensive moves with these in mind. For example, a knife defense that you attack the upper arm of the attacking arm, and then pass this arm/blade across you to gain access to the flank side of the attacker violates rule 1. Think of a knife as a gun: would you flag yourself with a gun? I think not, so why put yourself in harms way with a blade; as to pass it in front of you regardless if you think you have it controlled or not, just to risky. On the other hand, if you had attacked the lower arm with your blade, during the block, you now have attacked the muscles that allow the blade to be held in the hand. 99.99% of the time the attacker can not hold onto the weapon at all, now that one attack spot has moved you to step 4 immediately.

I encourage all of us to look at technique with an eye to see if it "Passes the idiot test or not".

As you can see I have been very busy putting up video! I want to make this site what it was once; a learning center for martial artists. Not only us Anjing Banfaests, but all those who have the warrior inside them. We are going to be bringing on other site connections like http://asksensei.blip.tv where we can use their band width for serving video, as I do with the Crazy Rulers video. I am really pushing video these days but martial arts school owners can use PDFs to communicate with their students, too. I also think a site like anjingbanfa.com can help school owners get more clients who are outside their "5 mile" radius! It can be used to expand your sales and profits, your teachings, and support of the giving the bad guys the bad day!

As some of you know I was an integral part of Martial Arts America, as a contributor in several of the teaching manuals. Especially on the "How to teach Children" in martial arts. I was also the first dean of the first martial arts university... although it closed its doors.. it was fun to be the first there and really open the students eyes to teaching the arts.

I have been in the arts for over 48 years now and have see the old school, the commercial school, and the ugly school! I know how to teach the arts... to any person, any age, any where, and under any conditions. That I know how to do because teaching needs to have only two things connected.. fun and learning. You do that, the rest is easy!

More on that later.. I am also adding individual master pages to those who want them... and teaching black belts, so watch for those. I am also converting all our stuff for ipod use, as well.

Yes.. I finally did it! I got our art names URL.. http://www.anjingbanfa.com and wow, is it structuring up nice. I am uploading everyday to it and will be adding new content every week that I can! This week alone we got up full video on the black belt test 2006, a 54 minute highlight of the event, the brotherhood of the blade (defenders video) where Kerry Sensei was teaching the defenders at the event, and I added downloads of many of my popular DVDs plus programs. We even have warrior music and our famous senseihood CD ROM disk for download. We are moving on to women's self defense topics, knife throwing, axe throwing, and home made martial arts training equipment. I will use this blog to update the uses of the site, as to what is new.. so will link over to it... I am very excited about the new site as it allows me to really teach from long distance via the streaming video, download PDF's with security, and the paypal system for sales. Hey, everyone, this site costs me money so purchase or donate to the site to help offset the costs, ok!
